Golden Circle itineraries

Visit Iceland suggests one to three days for the Golden Circle. One day covers Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið; a second adds Silfra, a hot pool and the glacier at a slower pace.

Visit Iceland, the official travel guide, suggests one to three days for the Golden Circle. The difference is not distance, since the whole loop is only about 242 km. It is what you add to the three classic stops. One day is enough for Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and a look into Kerið; two days give room for the activities that each take a morning or an afternoon.

One day by car

Leave Reykjavík early and drive the 47 minutes to Þingvellir. Park at P1 by the visitor centre at Hakið, follow the signed paths through the Almannagjá gorge to the Law Rock, where the laws were once recited from memory, and return to the car or continue to P2 below Öxarárfoss. The exhibition in the visitor centre takes about 40 minutes if you want the background on the assembly and the rift.

From Þingvellir it is just under an hour to Geysir. Stay long enough to see Strokkur erupt more than once; it goes every few minutes. Gullfoss is nine minutes further, with its two drops of 11 and 20 metres into the canyon of the Hvítá. On the way back, Kerið is 50 minutes south of Gullfoss, and Reykjavík another hour and five minutes beyond. In summer you can start in the afternoon and still finish in daylight; the driving page has the details for each leg.

One day on a tour

The large coach tours take seven to eight and a half hours and stop at Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, with pickup in Reykjavík as an option; Kerið is added only on some departures. Reviews mention about an hour at each place. If you want a soak at the end, the combination tour with the Secret Lagoon takes about ten hours, includes the lagoon entrance and gives you an hour and a half in the water between Kerið and the classic stops at Strokkur, Gullfoss and Þingvellir.

Two days, at an easier pace

Split the loop and add one activity to each day.

On the first day, start at Þingvellir with a snorkel in Silfra. The tours meet at the fissure, last about three hours including the briefing and the hot drink afterwards, and drivers park at P5. Spend the rest of the morning in the park, then drive on to Laugarvatn. Laugarvatn Fontana bakes rye bread in the hot ground for about 24 hours, and the bread-baking session lets you taste a loaf that went into the ground the day before, with a slice of smoked trout. The baths at Fontana reopened after a full renovation on 1 August 2026.

On the second day, continue to Geysir and Gullfoss in the morning. From Gullfoss you can join a snowmobile tour or the monster truck onto Langjökull. In the afternoon, drive to the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir, about an hour from Geysir, built in 1891 and reopened in 2014, which is open until 19:00 from October to May and until 20:00 in summer. Friðheimar, the tomato greenhouse in Reykholt, keeps its kitchen open daily from 11:30 to 16:00. Finish at Kerið on the way back.

Brúarfoss fits on either day for those who like a walk. Perlan puts it about 90 km from Reykjavík; from the newer car park it is a five-minute walk, from the older one 3.5 km each way.

With a glacier day

If you do not drive, the Golden Circle day with snowmobiling puts the main sights and an hour on Langjökull into ten hours from Reykjavík. Reviews say the price of this is about 30 minutes at Geysir and Gullfoss each, and that storms cancel the snowmobile on some days. Book it early in your stay so you have a spare day.

Three days with the south coast

Some tours begin with a day on the Golden Circle and continue along the south coast. The three-day tour with an ice cave visits Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss on day one, then heads east to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and a guided walk into a natural ice cave. Two nights in a double or twin room with breakfast are included, and each guest may bring one piece of luggage of up to 20 kg.

A short winter day

In December the sun rises at Þingvellir after 11:00 and sets before 15:30. Leave Reykjavík around 09:30 to arrive at first light, and keep the Þingvellir stop to the gorge and the viewpoint. Reach Geysir around noon and Gullfoss in the early afternoon, and decide there whether Kerið still fits before dark. A soak in a hot pool makes a good last stop after sunset.

If your trip continues to North Iceland, akureyritourism.com has itineraries for Akureyri and the north.

Questions travellers ask

Can you do the Golden Circle in one day?

Yes. The loop from Reykjavík with Kerið is about 242 km and just under four hours of driving, and the guided tours take 6.5 to 10 hours. A single day leaves about an hour at each main stop.

Is two days on the Golden Circle too much?

Not if you add the activities. Silfra, the bread baking at Fontana, the Secret Lagoon, Brúarfoss and a glacier tour from Gullfoss do not fit into one day alongside the main sights.

In which order should I visit the Golden Circle?

From Reykjavík, Þingvellir comes first, then Geysir, then Gullfoss ten minutes further on, with Kerið on the way back south. The guided tours follow the same order or start with Kerið.

Can I combine the Golden Circle with the south coast?

Yes. Some three-day tours spend the first day on the Golden Circle and then continue along the south coast to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. One includes two nights of accommodation with breakfast and a natural ice cave.

How do I plan a Golden Circle day in winter?

Plan around the light. In December the sun rises at Þingvellir after 11:00 and sets before 15:30, so leave Reykjavík in the dark, keep the stops short and decide at Gullfoss whether Kerið still fits.
